Several coverage elements apply to construction businesses. A few key coverages would be General Liability, Equipment, Auto Liability, and Workers Comp. General Liability covers bodily injury and property damage to a third party. This often applies to a contractors 'ongoing operations' or 'completed operations'...where a third party experiences damage and the contractor is at fault. Contractor's equipment is covered by the Inland Marine policy, which may include leased or rented items. Auto Liability, for contractors, is a significant exposure and good auto coverage is critical. Workers Comp protects your employees in the event they suffer an on the job injury.
There are lots of strategies for contractors to consider as they aim for lower costs. Certain construction classes (roofing, demolition, rigging, etc) can increase risk and raise the rate. Residential vs commercial type of work being done can influence the rate. Market wide trends may cause carriers to be less competitive, and there are also situations where carriers want to build volume and offer lower rates. So much goes in to getting better pricing...which is exactly why our expertise comes in handy for construction owners.
Contractors who aim for better coverage and lower premiums should focus their attention on risk management efforts. Employee safety and a strong safety culture is crucial for establishing better Workers Comp premiums. Jobsite security allows Builders Risk programs to be more cost effective. And strong fleet safety programs are becoming a requirement for competitive auto insurance premiums. Reach out to our office if you would like further instruction on these items and more.
